As we recently noted, we are working to reduce the impact of spam comments across the Pressible network. If you’re a Pressible Author or Site Administrator, here’s a change to Pressible you should note:
As of Wednesday, August 13th (2014), the default “Discussion Settings” have been updated so that u
For the past four years, users did not need to be signed in to Pressible sites to comment; entering your name and email was sufficient. We made this change now because our spam-control utility (Akismet) cannot keep up with the expanding powers of bots. Currently, this is not a setting a Pressible Administrator can override for any Pressible site (Pressible does not even expose the “Discussion” setting menu).
What is the effect of this change? Non-registered users can no longer leave comments on posts. Since only individuals with TC or CU emails can register on Pressible.org, a number of a Pressible site’s readers may be affected. BUT: These users can still use the “Contact” link on every site, which will email their message to the Site Administrator. AND: Site Administrators can add new users (anyone with any email) to their site, which registers them as a Pressible User (the role “Subscriber” is sufficient and perfect for this purpose). So, while a non-registered user can’t leave a comment immediately, they can be added fairly easily for the purpose of expanding the potential commenters for any (and every) Pressible site.
We are going to keep this setting for the foreseeable future (i.e., Fall 2014) as we explore other options. Thanks for your understanding! Please let us know if you have any thoughts or questions:
